Ludbrook House Newsletter
August 2010; well across the mid way boundary of 2010 !
In April/May I travelled to England, Scotland & Ireland. It
was hard to find boutique/artisan food producers and outlets in any of these
countries and tea rooms replace New Zealand’s cafes in small towns. I
became a specialist in tea and scones! I am convinced that it
is very important to the enjoyment of eating a scone to offer jams or jellies
that are at least homemade and not in a pre-packaged plastic container. How
lucky we are in NZ to have access to wonderful regional preserves. I
came home re-invigorated with enthusiasm for our own delicious jams and preserves.
This year the Ludbrook Family is celebrating the 150th centenary of the
purchase of Tupe Tupe, the farm that we live on here in Ohaeawai. Our
home is the second family home built on the property and along with the orchard
that we have established we are lucky enough to able to pick fruit, figs and
lemons, from trees that are still growing strongly in the vicinity of the
original homestead..
Tupe Tupe is situated on the Taiamai plain, a region known in pre–European
times for it’s ability to grow healthy and vigorous crops for the local
Maori. The soil is volcanic and has an abundance of springs delivering
delicious spring water to Ludbrook House and to the farm cattle.
It is a privilege to be able to use spring water in our commercial kitchen
and I am sure that this is a contributing reason for the wonderful flavours
we capture in the production of our preserves, jams, jellies, condiments and
vinegars.
As the countdown to Christmas is close to starting we welcome any contact
from established or new clients. Our mail order section is being bought
up to date and we are happy to help with suggestions for Christmas gift hampers
and will post directly overseas if you wish.
Best news; Roger is still making Ludbrook House Pure Beef Sausages (
see About Us page )
‘Handmade at Ludbrook House’ stands for taste and integrity. Our core products of preserves, jams, jellies and condiments hold the essence of traditional preserving methods with the added value of the utilization of the beautiful fruit grown here in the Bay of Islands.
If you are travelling North, please call in.
Refreshments are available in the garden which is registered with the NZ Gardens Trust and our gorgeous shop is stocked with all our products plus some not found on the product lists.
We serve tea or coffee ( real china !) with a slice of fabulous cake and invite you to relax awhile and enjoy the view.
Best wishes from
Chris Ludbrook
